CATCH REPORT FOR OLDAKER PARTY
2007 APRIL 21
Leo Beeman is from Durango, Colorado and Paul Oldaker is from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We stayed at the Hotel Buenavista on the East Cape. We had two people on one super panga (Mosca) for four days. Our captain was Viktor Garciglia Jr. Son of the Viktor Garciglia on the Vittorio and ex Buenavista super panga skipper. Overall one slow day for marlin, another slow day due to the north wind and two good days.
2007 APRIL 16- We went north off Punta Pescadero after getting mackerel (No sardines). Trolled all day without a strike. We see other boats hooked up. The spread was two lures on outriggers and a despined mackerel with trolling weight in the middle. North wind picked up in the afternoon. We did see four marlin together on surface, but none would take the bait. They were well within Bahia de Palmas. The most I have seen together at one time.
2007 APRIL 17- The north wind blew so it got rough. Few baits available. Tried the same area and trolling spread. Picked up one black skipjack (barrilete negro) on a bleeding mackerel lure (chivato). We keep it for bait. Finally too rough so we bottom fish behind Punta Pescadero in two places. Catch three orange sided triggerfish and one small cabrilla for ceviche. Lose a lot of hooks and baits to sharp toothed unknown fish. One was big. Wind and kite surfers are all over the north bay area. We unload on the beach near the Pemex station and are trucked back to the hotel.
2007 APRIL 18- We go to Cabo and be tourists. Not many flags on returning cruisers at Cabo.
2007 APRIL 19- Calm. We get mackerel. Try deep bottom fishing off La Ribera in a couple hundred feet of water for cabrilla. I miss two strikes. We then troll out to the marlin grounds. We see whale spouts off of Cabo Pulmo. I get a small striped marlin (70 pounds) that came up to check out the teaser (chivato color). It then took the tossed bait (See attached picture). We spot some manta rays on top. See another marlin on top, but it will not take the tossed bait. A nearby whale shows his flukes for a deep dive to Leo.
2007 APRIL 20- Light chop. A few mackerel available. We try deep bottom fishing again, but little action. Troll to the marlin grounds and get a look from a navy patrol boat. Two corvette size navy ships then flank us on their way north while we head south. We get another small striped marlin hooked up which whacked a mean joe green lure and then took a pitched bait. However he shakes the hook. Spot another marlin, but no hookup. See a whale breech in the distance. Run into Punta Colorado and Leo catches a good sized pargo maria. It was good sashimi, ceviche and snapper Veracruz for dinner. I get a 10-15 pound roosterfish that is released. Lots of inshore action, but no more bait. 8 to 10 schools of small rays were heading south at the dock.
Seems a boat and a kayak in the bay had a close encounter with a pod of orca’s in Bahia de Palmas. The first I have heard of on the East Cape. The whales were real close with a couple small young ones. Seems they were feeding on the schools of rays. Some great pictures. Gene, I gave them your mexfish.com address and my email address. I hope they send you pictures. If they are sent to me I will forward them.
